费尔 ∙ 麦戈罗尔博士(Dr. Phil Mcgraw)是当代美国最著名的电视主持人之一。[1] 笔者读过他的一些作品，偶尔也观看他主持的电视节目。他在家庭问题上的许多深刻见解给我留下了深刻的印象。我也多次把他的录音著作（如《家庭第一(Family First)》在课堂上放给我的学生听，使他们既学英语，也能从其他方面获益。
5月17日出版的Parade周刊登载了他的一篇文章。最近以来，菲尔收到大量电视观众的来信，向他讨教如何面对由于失业、临时解雇等原因造成的家庭经济困境。一些家庭连婚姻也出现了危机。他的文章题为：“告诉你的家庭：齐心协力，我们一定能挺过这一切(Tell Your Family: We Can Get Through This Together)。”文章单列出一小部分，标题为“让孩子参与问题的解决(Make Kids Part of the Solution)”。费尔用他自己的切身经历向读者讲述一个涉及孩子教育的真理。中国人不是常说好事可以转变为坏事，坏事也可以转变为好事吗？请读费尔的短文。

Tao Te Ching

A collection of 81 small philosophical poems, the Tao is based on the ideas of simplicity, patience, and compassion. Accept life as it is. [1]Be compassionate with yourself and other people. When I first read the Tao, I had to accept that I was in a huge amount of trouble and that I would never be able to drink or do drugs again. It helped me think about the world in a different way. It’s hard to pick one poem, but Number 41 might be my favorite: “The path into the light seems dark, / the path forward seems to go back, / the direct path seems long, / true power seems week, / The Tao is nowhere to be found. / Yet it nourishes and completes all things.” |

Prior to the recent G-20 summit in London, there were widespread rumors that French president Sarkozy might walk out over a U.S. push for more stimulus spending and that Germany too disagreed to the US proposal for a solution to the world’s economic crisis. In the end, however, the leaders of the participating countries decided to pour 1.1 trillion dollars into the International Monetary Fund (IMF) so that it could help poor countries to tide over the current economic downturn. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and the New York stock market responded with a sharp rise. |
