Hand in Hand

Hand in Hand[1]   By Wayne Qian   (Having watched together with my ESL Level 5 students the performance by two Chinese handicapped ballet dancers  in a video on the popular U.S. website of Youtube.com[2], I found my voice sadly broken.)     One is missing a leg, the other a hand – Handicapped and almost lost in a vast land. They dance into love at first sight – Romantic, like a boy and a girl flying a kite.   As is usually so, their love is sweet. Dancing together, they help each other to beat All the odds against them aligned. Together, enormous obstacles they never mind.   The boy may stumble and trip and fall. The girl may fumble and drop her ball. Missteps and tumbles there are some, And many humble misgivings may come.   Love indeed doesn’t always bring joy instant, For them, anxiety is a companion constant. And there may even be struggle and suffering That reward loyalty and tolerance enduring.   But their love for ballet heals the heart The way good medicines make a disease depart. To an incredible height love lifts the dancers. To the unbelieving world such are their answers.          手  牵  手 [3]                     钱    炜   一个缺腿，一个缺手， 双双残疾，在世上几乎找不到自己。 他们一见钟情， 浪漫得像是一起放风筝的孩子。   甜蜜的爱把他们 连接在一起， 去跟世间的不平抗争， 再大的障碍也不在乎。   男孩有时会摔倒， 女孩有时会跌跤。 有的因为跨错了步， 有的因为误解所生。   爱情并不只是甜蜜， 焦虑是它永恒的常数。 更有痛苦和挣扎， 用忠诚、同情、宽容换取。   猶如药到病除， 爱情抚慰心灵。 爱情更使相爱的人共同攀登 前所未有的高度 – 像我们的芭蕾。           [1] This is the second poem I’ve ever written in my life, the first one being “I am Only a Little Leaf.” While the first is just words put into short sentences, I’m now trying to rhyme. The Chinese title of the dance, upon which this poem is based, is probably “手牵手,”not “手拉手”because the use of “牵” is more indicative of the emotions between the lovers. Readers in China, let me know if I’m wrong. [2] The video program was actually offered by China Central Television (CCTV), Channel 9. The background of the stage is an enormous dancing-style Chinese character “舞”written with a Chinese brush on the back curtain. The last stroke of the Chinese character, free and exceptionally long, looks very much like the magic crutch in the hand of the man dancer. It is unadorned but beautiful, delicate but powerful. [3] 朋友孙利群从旧金山给我的电子邮件中附有美国Youtube上转播的中国中央电视台9频道播放的芭蕾《手牵手》。我在课堂上给学生播放后，说话时竟发现自己的声音变了样。随后，乘学生小测验的时机，我写起这首小诗来。
