Tao Te Ching
by Lao-tzu
A collection of 81 small philosophical poems, the Tao is based on the ideas of simplicity, patience, and compassion. Accept life as it is. [1]Be compassionate with yourself and other people. When I first read the Tao, I had to accept that I was in a huge amount of trouble and that I would never be able to drink or do drugs again. It helped me think about the world in a different way. It’s hard to pick one poem, but Number 41 might be my favorite: “The path into the light seems dark, / the path forward seems to go back, / the direct path seems long, / true power seems week, / The Tao is nowhere to be found. / Yet it nourishes and completes all things.”
[1]I’m glad that this sentence appears in this short essay. My friends may remember that at the end of my every e-mail, they will find my motto: Take life as it is and keep your dream alive.
